Rushan Abbas*

Campaign for Uyghurs

Rushan Abbas started her activism work while she was a student in China, participating in the pro-democracy demonstrations at Xinjiang University in 1985 and 1988. Since her arrival in the United States in 1989, Ms. Abbas has been an ardent campaigner for the human rights of the Uyghur people and has worked closely with members of Congress since the 1990s. Ms. Abbas was a co-founder of the California-based Uyghur Overseas Student and Scholars Association in 1993, the first such Uyghur association in the United States, and served as that organization’s first Vice President. When Radio Free Asia launched service to the Uyghur region in 1998, Ms. Abbas was the first Uyghur reporter broadcasting daily there.

In 2017, Ms. Abbas founded Campaign for Uyghurs to advocate and promote human rights and democratic freedoms for Uyghurs and mobilize the international community to act to stop the human rights atrocities happening in East Turkistan (also known as the Xinjiang region in China). Ms. Abbas frequently briefs U.S. lawmakers and officials on the human rights situation in East Turkistan.

The Honorable Michele Bachmann*

The Honorable Michele Bachmann currently serves on Family Research Council’s Board of Directors. She was the first Republican woman to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Minnesota in 2006. Her focus in Congress was on national security, intelligence, and foreign policy. She served on the House Permanent Committee on Intelligence, giving her a role as overseer of the Central Intelligence Agency, National Security Agency, and the rest of the U.S. intelligence community.

Joseph Backholm is Senior Fellow for Biblical Worldview and Strategic Engagement at Family Research Council. He combines extensive legal, political, and policy experience with a love for the way biblical truth cultivates human flourishing.

Previously, Mr. Backholm served as legal counsel and Director of What Would You Say? at the Colson Center for Christian Worldview where he developed and launched a growing platform that creates short, animated videos answering common questions about faith and culture. His YouTube career began as a self-identified “6’5 Chinese Woman” in a series of YouTube videos exploring the logic of gender identity.

John Barsa*

John Barsa assumed his duties as Acting Administrator at USAID on April 11, 2020 after serving as Assistant Administrator for USAID’s Bureau for Latin America and the Caribbean. Prior to joining USAID, Mr. Barsa led the Department of Homeland Security Office of Partnership and Engagement as the Acting Assistant Secretary and later as the Principal Deputy Assistant Security.

Mr. Barsa began his career at the Department of Homeland Security in the Trump administration as Special Assistant to Secretary John Kelly. During the historic 2017 hurricane season, he deployed to Puerto Rico where he designed and led one of the most complex and challenging intergovernmental affairs efforts in FEMA history. Senator Marsha Blackburn was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2018 and is currently serving her first term representing Tennessee. She serves on the powerful Armed Services Committee, Judiciary Committee, Veterans’ Affairs Committee, and the Commerce, Science & Transportation Committee. Before her election to the Senate, Blackburn represented Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District and was Chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Communications and Technology. Blackburn began her career in public service in 1995 when she was named Executive Director of the Tennessee Film, Entertainment, and Music Commission. In 1998, she was elected to the Tennessee State Senate.

Blackburn is originally from Laurel, Mississippi and graduated from Mississippi State University. While studying, she worked her way through school selling books for the Southwestern Company, later becoming their first female sales manager. Blackburn then worked for the Castner Knott Company before starting her own business, Marketing Strategies.

She and her husband, Chuck, have two children and two grandsons.

Ken Blackwell is the Senior fellow for Human Rights and Constitutional Governance at Family Research Council. He is a national best-selling author, and his commentaries have been published in major newspapers and websites. In addition, he has been interviewed by many media outlets. He currently serves on the board of directors of various high-profile organizations and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Board of Advisors of the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs (JINSA).

Blackwell has served in various ways within government, from serving as the Mayor of Cincinnati, Treasurer and Secretary of State for Ohio, Undersecretary at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Human Rights Commission. His continuing education has included executive programs at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University. Blackwell has also received honorary doctoral degrees from 10 institutions of higher education. He holds Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees from Xavier University in Ohio, where he later served as a vice president and member of its faculty.

Lt. Gen. (Ret.) William Boykin *

Lt. Gen. (Ret.) William G. Boykin serves as Family Research Council’s Executive Vice President. He was one of the original members of the U.S. Army’s Delta Force. He was privileged to ultimately command these elite warriors in combat operations. Later, William Boykin commanded all the Army’s Green Berets as well as the Special Warfare Center and School.

In all, Lt. Gen. Boykin spent 36 years in the army, serving his last four years as the Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence. He is an ordained minister with a passion for spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ and encouraging Christians to become warriors in God’s Kingdom.

Ambassador Brownback served as Governor of Kansas from 2011 to 2018. Previously he served as a U.S. Senator (1996-2011) and in the U.S. House of Representatives (1995-1996) from Kansas. While a member of the Senate, he worked actively on the issue of religious freedom in multiple countries and was a key sponsor of the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998. He also served as Kansas Secretary of Agriculture (1986-1993) and was a White House Fellow in the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (1990-1991). Prior to his public service, Ambassador Brownback was a private attorney in Kansas and taught agricultural law at Kansas State University, co-authoring two books on the subject. He earned a B.S. from Kansas State University and a J.D. from the University of Kansas.

Pastor Andrew Brunson*

Izmir Resurrection Church

For 23 years, Andrew Brunson shared the love of Christ with the people of Izmir, Turkey as pastor of Izmir Resurrection Church. On October 7, 2016, swept up with many others following a coup attempt on the government, he and his wife, Norine, were taken to a detention center where they were informed that they posed a national security threat and would soon be deported. Less than two weeks later, Norine was released, but Pastor Brunson remained in detention without official charges until December 9 when he was formally charged with terrorism and espionage and imprisoned for what he feared might be three life sentences. In prison, Brunson faced inhumane conditions and solitary confinement, yet he continued to rely on God, knowing he had done nothing wrong.

Behind the scenes, the American church rallied around the Brunsons in prayer, while the newly elected Trump administration made his case a priority and many organizations, including Family Research Council, raised awareness of his case. On October 12, 2018, he was released from detention and allowed to leave the country. Given the rapidly developing events, USCIRF Commissioner Tony Perkins was asked by the White House to accompany the Brunsons on a military plane back to the U.S. Within 24 hours, images of Brunson praying for President Trump in the Oval Office were seen around the world.

Dr. Benjamin Carson*

Retired Neurosurgeon, Author, and Former Presidential Candidate

Dr. Ben Carson served for nearly 30 years as Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, a position he assumed when he was just 33 years old. In 1987, he successfully performed the first separation of craniopagus twins conjoined at the back of the head. He also performed the first fully successful separation of type-2 vertical craniopagus twins in 1997 in South Africa. Dr. Carson and his wife co-founded the Carson Scholars Fund, which recognizes young people of all backgrounds for exceptional academic and humanitarian accomplishments. The Fund operates in 50 states, has recognized more than 7,300 scholars, awarded more than $7.3 million in scholarships, and installed more than 1,150 Ben Carson Reading Rooms around the country.

Dr. Carson has received dozens of honors and awards in recognition of his achievements including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. He has authored nine books, four of which he co-wrote with his wife Candy. The U.S. News Media Group and Harvard’s Center for Public Leadership named him among “America’s Best Leaders” in 2008.

Born in Detroit to a single mother with a third grade education who worked multiple jobs to support their family, Dr. Carson was raised to love reading and education. He graduated from Yale University and earned his M.D. from the University of Michigan Medical School. He and his wife are the proud parents of three adult sons and three grandchildren.

Rev. Carter Conlon*

Carter Conlon has served as the senior pastor of Times Square Church in New York City since 2001. Pastor Conlon has always demonstrated a passion for prayer, which is evidenced by his gathering of 50,000 believers from many denominations to pray for one hour in the middle of Times Square. Through the overwhelming response to “Prayer in the Square,” Pastor Conlon introduced two new ministries: Feed New York and Worldwide Prayer meeting.

Pastor Carter’s one-minute devotional, “It’s Time to Pray,” is featured on 1010 WINS, the nation’s most listened to all news station, as well as 320 additional radio outlets. He also hosts a half hour radio program, “A Call to the Nation,” which is broadcasted throughout the United States. Pastor Carter has authored several books. In response to requests by ministers from all over the world for spiritual mentoring, Pastor Carter developed “For Pastors Only,” a bi-weekly devotional ministry. He continues to actively serve on the Board of Directors for World Challenge (a ministry founded by David Wilkerson) and Summit International School of Ministry.

Pastor Carter is married to Dr. Teresa Conlon, and they are parents to three children and eight grandchildren.

Claire Culwell met her birth mother, Tonya, in March of 2009 and found out that her life is a miracle. At age 13, Tonya had a D&E dismemberment abortion at 20 weeks gestation. She went back to the doctor when things didn’t seem right and discovered that Claire had survived the abortion that successfully aborted her twin. Claire was born at 30 weeks and placed for adoption. She has forgiven her birth mother and shares her story to inspire change and life-affirming options for women in crisis.

She is an internationally known pro-life speaker and soon-to-be author. She has been featured on Fox News, Focus on the Family, and many other media outlets. Claire lives in Austin, Texas with her family.

Marjorie Dannenfelser is president of Susan B. Anthony List. Over the last three election cycles, SBA List and its super PAC, Women Speak Out, have reached more than 4.6 million voters by visiting voters at their homes to win a pro-life White House and secure a pro-life majority in the U.S. Senate. In January 2020, Dannenfelser was named national co-chair of the Pro-Life Voices for Trump coalition, a role she held during the 2016 campaign after securing four groundbreaking pro-life commitments from the nominee.

Dannenfelser is the author of Life is Winning: Inside the Fight for Unborn Children and Their Mothers. Corey A. DeAngelis is Director of School Choice for Reason Foundation and an adjunct scholar at Cato Institute. He is also the executive director at Educational Freedom Institute.

His research primarily focuses on the effects of school choice programs on non-academic outcomes such as criminal activity, character skills, mental health, and political participation. He has authored or co-authored over 40 journal articles, book chapters, and reports on education policy. His research has been published in peer-reviewed academic journals such as Social Science Quarterly, School Effectiveness and School Improvement, Educational Review, Educational Research and Evaluation, Peabody Journal of Education, and Journal of School Choice.
